Pathway Program Roadmap (ELICOS to VET to HE)

The student enrolled in an English course. Nobody showed them it was the first step of a four-year journey.

Pathway students — ELICOS into vocational study into higher education — are among the most valuable enrollments an institution has: multiple programs, multiple years, one recruitment cost. Yet many pathway students cannot describe their own progression. They know the course they are in. The path through it, the entry conditions for the next stage, and the timeline connecting them live in an advisor's head.

Why progression stays foggy

Each program communicates about itself. The English center talks about English; the vocational program about its units; the degree about its requirements. The connective tissue — what score unlocks the next stage, when to apply, what happens if a stage takes longer — sits in policy documents and advising conversations the student may or may not have had. Foggy progression produces exactly what you would expect: students who drift away at the seams between programs, precisely where the institution's revenue model assumed they would continue.

What a pathway roadmap shows

The whole journey as one sequence: current stage, next stage, the conditions connecting them, and the decision points along the way. The Discovery Board lets students explore destination programs early — a student who can see the degree at the end of the English course has a reason to finish the English course.

How to build it

Six steps inside SumHubs

01
Map each pathway end to end, with entry conditions, typical durations, and application windows between stages.
02
Build the Roadmap so any student can locate themselves and see what comes next.
03
Make progression conditions plain: scores, completions, attendance.
Conditions in plain language prevent surprise at the boundary.
04
Use the Discovery Board to showcase destination programs from day one of the pathway.
05
Flag transition windows and their deadlines well ahead.
The seams are where students fall through.
06
Pilot with one pathway cohort and measure one number: how many students progress to the next stage without an advising intervention to explain it.

You don't have to start from a blank page.
